Projects > #BlackGirlLit: Between Literature, Performance & Memory

Riffing off the hashtag anthem #BlackGirlMagic coined by fashion designer & blogger Auntie Peebz and the double meaning of the term “lit” - (‘to turn up' or short-hand for ‘literature’), #BlackGirlLit is a performance art/curatorial initiative that highlights work that pivots off of the written and oral traditions of both American and trans-nationalist black feminist/womanist frameworks. This performance art program was performed at Five Myles (headed by fellow artist Hanne Tierney) in Brooklyn and included a performance that I entitled "Blues\Blank\Black" which was inspired by the work of Toni Morrison's "Bluest Eye" & "Beloved" as well as by performances by Ayana Evans (New York), Kal Gezahegn (Boston), Tsedaye Makonnen (Washington, DC), Marcelline Mandeng (Philadelphia), & Helina Metaferia (San Francisco). Stay tuned to this page to see more documentation from this project. All photos by Tiph Browne
